Timberland Enterprises, Inc. - Carbon Credit Sequestation
Timberland Enterprises, Inc. is a forestry focused organization dedicated to a sustainable and practical approach for the landowner to manage for and derive from the highest level of return on your timber and land investment.
Trees are designed to store carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. Now with the implementation of the Chicago Climate Exchange and other entities, the tree/landowner can receive compensation for this carbon storage.
How It Works
There are three ways to generate revenue from the carbon credit system.
- If you are going to plant trees, several approaches are available to you. The USDA Commodity Credit Corporation has cost share programs to assist landowners with technical support and financial subsidy for buying the seedlings and the planting process. Timberland Enterprises, Inc. can assist you with these programs. In addition, Timberland Enterprises, Inc. will match your project with their best offer from a number of upstream aggregators. Some programs pay you in annual payments, and while other programs pay you upfront lump sums.
- Trees that were planted in 1990 and after qualify for the basic carbon credit program that pays the landowner an annual payment based on the age of the trees, type of tree, and the geographic location of the site. Timberland Enterprises, Inc. will match your individual project with the best revenue source.
- The Working Forest Program is designed to accommodate older, more mature trees. The guidelines in this category are being finalized and will be available soon.
How It Affects You
A carbon credit agreement involves only the storage of carbon by your trees. When you sell your carbon credits, that is all you are selling. The land still belongs to you, the trees still belong to you, and you continue to manage your trees according to the management plan that already exists.
How You Get Paid
Once a carbon credit package has been put together, it is put up for sale on the Chicago Climate Exchange or other sources, depending on your particular program. The basic carbon credit program is a five year contract consisting of five annual payments. At the end of five years, you are able to renegotiate a new five year contract at a new price. Your check does not come from the government. It comes from private industry that needs your carbon storage to offset their carbon emissions.
